Norman Lewis

Norman “Norm” Lewis of West Des Moines, age 90, died peacefully at his home January 31st, 2010.
He was born May 29, 1919 in Dysart, Iowa the ninth of ten children, son of Freem and Jesse Lewis. He graduated from Dysart High School at age 16 where he excelled in baseball and basketball.
Norm served his country for 4 years in WWII with the Army Air Force as a belly ball turret gunner in a B-17.
He was employed by the Sherwin Williams Paint Company for 35 years as store manager. He managed locations in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Aurora, Ill, Fondulac, WI, Waterloo, Iowa, Battle Creek, MI, and finally to Des Moines. After retiring from Sherwin Williams he finished his career travelling 7 states representing the Kyanize Paint Company.
Norm was a member of the West Des Moines United Methodist Church for 46 years and formerly active in the Methodist Men’s group. He is also a former member of the West Des Moines Lions Club. He spent time and enjoyed many friends at Terrace Hills Golf Club.
Norm was preceded in death by his parents, 5 sisters and 4 brothers. He is survived by his wife, Midge Gibbs Lewis, of more than 63 years, daughter Juliann (David) Herman of Baldwin, WI, Jeffrey (Theresa) of Cornelia, GA, and Jay (Shelly), of Davidson, NC. In addition he enjoyed 6 grandchildren; Sarah (Josh) Birkel, Emily (Bill) Puhl, Abbey (Jon) Duch, Sydney Lewis, Spencer Lewis, Conner Lewis and one great grandchild Kollyn Lewis Birkel.
Visitation will be held at WDM United Methodist Church, 8th and Grand on Tuesday, February 2, from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the church on Wednesday, February 3 at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the West Des Moines United Methodist Church, or Iowa Home Health Care Hospice, 11333 Aurora Ave, Urbandale, Iowa.
